Carter William Proffitt Obituary - 2022 - Carter-Trent Funeral Home (2024)

Carter William Proffitt, 84, of Kingsport, TN, lost his battle with cancer on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was the son of the late Carter Columbus and Martha May Bentley-Proffitt.

Carter loved sports, his church, his family, and his country. He played minor league baseball for the Kingsport Cherokees in 1954. Mr. Proffit coached women’s softball and several other teams over the years. He was a fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Tennessee Vols. He was a youth leader, Sunday school teacher, and minister, serving his church over many years. His love for his family was all encompassing and being with them made him the happiest. He was a collector of many different things and had many hobbies. Carter Served his country in the National Guard.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in passing by his wife, Edith; brothers, Paul and David Proffitt; sisters, Peggy Ball, Rose Adkins, and Linda Pippen; son, Sammy Proffitt; stepdaughter, Donna Lewis; stepgrandsons, Zachary Christian and Donald Navarro.

Those left to carry on his extensive legacy include his children, William Proffitt (Mary), Deborah Haynes (the late Lester Haynes), Mary Waterman (David), Delores “Tina” Jones (Carl), Michael Proffitt (Debbie); stepchildren, Ronald Christian (Jessica) and Tina Navarro; sisters, Brenda Byington, Mary Chapman (Jimmy), and Emma Puckett (Rob); brother, James Proffitt (Donna); first wife, Dorothy Bethany; 10 grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, extended family and friends also remain.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Pilgrims Chapel. A Funeral service will follow the visitation, beginning at 7:00pm, with Brothers David Grubb and Jim Miller officiating. Music will be provided by Sandy Deery and Tiffany Waterman.

A graveside service,with military honors presented by American Legion Hammond Post #3/265, will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at Gunning’s Cemetery in Blountville, TN at 11:00am, with Brothers David Grubb and Jim Miller officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to be there at 10:45am. Pallbearers will be Kevin Miller, Dustin Waterman, Chris Proffitt, Lester Haynes, Josh Strong, Tanner Gross.
